About Southmoor Park

Longmont has a rich farming history, with the first generation of Japanese farmers arriving here between 1915-1920. Goroku Kanemoto was one of the most prominent in the St. Vrain Valley. When IBM located here in the late 1960’s to early 1970’s, the Kanemoto family created the then 700 home Southmoor Park Community – donating land for Burlington Elementary, two churches, Kanemoto Park and Pool, and the Buddhist Temple.

We are now a community of over 1400 single family homes with additional townhouses, duplexes and condos scattered throughout. With over 3,000 residents, we are the largest neighborhood in the city – nearly 3% of Longmont’s current population.

The Tower of Compassion in Kanemoto Park was also donated for the people of Longmont as an expression of gratitude and giving selflessly of oneself. A nearby plaque gives an explanation of the five levels of the tower – each representing one of the meanings of compassion: Love, Empathy, Understanding, Gratitude of All Things, and Giving Selflessly of Oneself.

These are traits we see in our neighbors and strive to achieve in ourselves as a caring, compassionate community.
